Old School Soviet Digital Watch Is Back

The US and USSR going “Band for Band”

Our friends at kommandostore talk about the Cold War on their site so often, it’s become one of their defining aesthetics…..and that’s a good thing- read on!

Grand armies and weapons are arguably less than half of the story.

Many of the cold war ‘battles’ from the 1950s through the 1990s took place in the minds and on the wrists of millions of people. Some might say they certainly still do…

Rogue media campaigns, protests & activism, black ops — they defined the hottest parts of the Cold War. But what if we told you that the watch you were wearing was just as important? The Soviet Union sure thought so…

Having gotten sucked into the almost endless lore rabbithole of watches, the first thing that kommandostore sought to bring back from obscurity was the Elektronika 55B — the soviet union’s most popular digital watch that went the way of… well, the Soviet Union… When it collapsed in ’91.

Above all else, there’s one story about this watch that truly stands on its own, a story that will make you realize that there is much more to this little watch that jovially plays chiptune soviet music…

It involves two of the most powerful men in the world, Leonid Brezhnev and Henry Kissinger convening and comparing their new digital watches.

Ok, they weren’t really wearing the watches in that photo, but such an encounter really did happen between the two gentlemen in the early 70s, one that subtly let the United States know that the Soviets were right on the US’s tail for semiconductor technology.

On a somewhat-routine visit to Moscow, US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger wore a Pulsar P2 Watch — one of the very first digital watches. Known for it’s striking red LED display and appearance on the wrist of none other than James bond.

It also carried a hefty price tag, with the 21k gold edition costing enough to buy you a car in today’s money.

You tell us, is $1800 usd/ $2,526 cad in today’s money worth it for one of the two base models?

The meeting was with Leonid Brezhnev, General Secretary of the Soviet Union. He remarked that he did indeed like Kissinger’s watch, being a man of taste.

Then he told Kissinger that the USSR had already developed a prototype using the very same technology.

Kissinger was reportedly astonished — and was presented with a functioning Soviet-Made digital wristwatch, the Elektronika B6-02. Featuring CMOS circuits, it was blocky, brutalist, and affordable enough for practically anyone to buy when it officially launched.

The whole Elektronika series carried this statement — the latest fancy tech of the west is cool, but when it’s done the soviet way, for way cheaper, it’s not a luxury to be worn by only the elites.

It didn’t take a horology enthusiast to buy and wear this watch. It’s Kalashnikov-esque ubiquity meant it was worn by everyone from party members to coal miners.

Sure, in 1969 we brought a luxury-watch masterpiece, the Omega Speedmaster, to the Moon before the Soviets were able to. But as a tool of propaganda, the USSR might have had us beat, and the Elektronika 5 appeared in space several more times…

We found it intriguing and somewhat disheartening that Elektronika, what seemed to be the people’s choice, was snuffed out much in the same time period as the Soviet union.

In a world full of Casios & Timexes, who can’t help but succumb to the charm of the plucky Elektronika, so why not give it the wrist time it deserves…because it is now available once again and this time in a near perfect reproduction right down to the packaging.

A 1:1 functional replica of the original Elektronika with 4 new Slav-approved “Melody” alarms. Sanctioned to the second-hand market (pun intended), thankfully kommandostore thought that the watch deserved a proper revival after its unceremonious disappearance following the collapse of the USSR.
Just like the original, it’s an affordable and reliable piece with just enough fun to get even the most uptight horologists asking you questions.  But unlike the OGs, the sad truth of capitalism is that we’re slaves to supply and demand. They are running out fast, and even though there are plans to quickly continue production, there may be a slight gap. So, if you’re interested, this is kind of a last call.

Raketa’s Three Thousand Euro Russian Made Puppet Watch

Preserving history, creating the future

The Raketa Watch Factory in collaboration with the famous Moscow Sergey Obraztsov Puppet Theatre presents an exclusive watch model — Raketa Theatre. The limited series consists of 100 individually numbered pieces. Imagine it’s not just a watch, but a unique ticket to a special performance — where there are only 100 seats in the auditorium. Each watch is like a personalized theatre seat with an engraved number:

1/100, 2/100…100/100.

The dial of the model is inspired by the famous pediment clock that decorates the facade of the Sergey Obraztsov Puppet Theatre, where each hour corresponds to the figurine of an animal. Each figurine image has been reinterpreted by the Raketa’s designers in a modern avant-garde aesthetic and applied to the dial.

The restrained design of the Raketa Theatre watches is elegantly enhanced by three stylish accents: an avant-garde dial, multi-colored printing on the rotor, and contrasting stitching on the leather strap. These thoughtful details resonate with each other, creating a stricking balance of restraint and distinctiveness.

New time for the Sergey Obraztsov Puppet Theatre

The partnership with the Sergey Obraztsov Puppet Theatre goes beyond developing an exclusive watch model. Raketa specialists are also consulting the theatre on the restoration of its famous monumental facade clock. This project reflects the brand’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage and its tradition of incorporating art into watch movements.

Elena Bulukova, Director of the Sergey Obraztsov Puppet Theatre

“The clock is under restoration, but time at Obraztsov does not stand still. The clock’s characters have a new look now. Instead of becoming museum exhibits, they remain with us, as part of our living reality. This is how the living history of the puppet theatre continues”.

The art of appreciating time

For many people, the Sergey Obraztsov Puppet Theatre’s pediment clock is not just a mechanism but also a symbol of warm memories of the first time their parents brought them to meet fairy-tale characters. This tradition has become part of the personal history for thousands of families. Raketa’s new model is meant to bring back these touching moments, helping to lay the foundation for new traditions for future generations.

Made in Russia

The heart of the Raketa Theatre model is its automatic movement, manufactured from A to Z at the Raketa Watch Factory in St. Petersburg, one of the few watch manufacturers in the world that produces its own movements, relying on a base of Soviet-era production technology that passed down through generations.

Elegantly Simple- New Raketa Aviator Watch

Creating specialized watches for extreme professions is a tradition at  the Raketa Watch Factory and now they have just presented a new version of its popular Pilot model.

The history of aviator watches dates back to the early 20th century when aviation and wrist watches evolved side by side. The first aviator watches were built as professional tools, eschewing decorations in favor of durability, reliability and readability. They had a strict and minimalistic design: a round case, a high-contrast dial, wide hands and large numerals. Everything you need to make note of the passage of time while controlling a warbird and flying upside down.

KISS- Keep It Simple Soviet!

In  designing  its  new Pilot  model,  Raketa  tried  to   recreate   the spirit  of  early  aviator watches following the principle of “nothing superfluous”.

Designed in a classic style but with Raketa’s recognizable identity, the new case with its clean facets combines a glossy polish and a satin finish. This look is harmoniously continued with the stainless steel bracelet, which emphasizes the masculine character of the timepiece.

A  genuine   leather   strap   is   also   included   in   the   set.   The  movement   is protected by a screw-in crown which provides a water resistance of up to 200 meters.

Several   features  ensure  easy   readability   in   all   lighting   conditions. Super-LumiNova coating is applied to the markers and large numerals of the dial, but also to the hour and minute hands. Contrast is created through color combinations- all the hands including the bright yellow second hand perfectly stand out against the matte black dial stylized in the same manner as a precision aircraft dashboard instrument gauge.

A double-sided anti-reflective coating on the sapphire crystal provides additional assurance of accurate readings.

The heart of the Raketa Pilot is its automatic movement manufactured from A to Z at the Raketa Watch Factory in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Raketa Amphibian Is A Watch For Deep Submersion

Based in Saint-Petersburg, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, Raketa Watch Factory has been creating watches for sailors, submariners, and divers for more than half a century. Raketa presents today a new version of its model for divers – Amphibia.

While preserving both the spirit and identity of its predecessors, this iconic model is now in conformity with all the modern requirements for diving, both in terms of design and functionality:

  • case made from stainless steel and capable of withstanding pressures at 200 metres depth.
  • a screw-in crown securing the movement from any water entry.
  • a unidirectional bezel with a 15-minute scale and luminescent indexes, producing clear clicking sound for error-free adjustment with no risk of accidental misalignment. The start marker is embossed as part of a functional design.
  • a high-contrast dial with large indexes and hands, easy to read and enhancing dive control. The luminescent coating ensures a bright and long-lasting glow. At greater depths, where visibility is often low and light conditions vary, orange stands out more effectively than any other color because its wavelength is less absorbed by water.
  • a brightly colored silicone strap crafted for comfort in aquatic environments: with its full-length perforations, you may adjust the size for a snug fit with your wetsuit and prevent water build-up beneath the strap. A second strap in black silicone is included, and swapping is easy with a quick-release system.

The heart of Raketa Amphibia is its automatic movement, manufactured from A to Z at the Raketa Watch Factory in St. Petersburg. The movement’s rotor is adorned with an image of a mermaid designed in the style of illustrations from Russian fairy tales. It reminds every diver of his secret dream — to encounter a beautiful mermaid under the sea.

  • son nouveau boîtier en acier inoxydable est capable de résister à des pressions jusqu’à 200 mètres de profondeur ;
  • sa couronne filetée et vissée protège le mouvement de toute pénétration d’eau ;
  • sa lunette unidirectionnelle avec des index luminescents et à l’échelle de 15 minutes, produit des clics audibles assurant un réglage sans erreur et sans risque de désalignement accidentel. Le repère de départ est en relief ce qui rend son utilisation encore plus pratique ;
  • son cadran à contraste élevé avec des index et des aiguilles de grande taille, assure une lecture facile et permet d’améliorer le contrôle de la plongée. Le, revêtement luminescent assure une brillance intense et durable. À grande profondeur, où la visibilité est souvent faible et les conditions de luminosité variables, l’orange ressort mieux que toutes les autres couleurs car sa longueur d’onde est moins absorbée par l’eau ;

ArtyA Purity Wavy HMS Mirror Watch Is Perfection

ArtyA unveils an avant-garde horological creation:

“Purity Wavy HMS Mirror” A fully in-house caliber reimagined through masterful handcraftsmanship. The perfect union of design and comfort, encased in the groundbreaking Wavy case, crafted from titanium with a transparent protective DLC coating. The first-ever mirror casebackStairway To Heaven: The Movement At the heart of this exceptional timepiece, ArtyA’s latest in-house caliber: Stairway To Heaven HMS. This manual-winding movement embodies the Manufacture’s dedication to both visual spectacle and horological excellence: • Microbead-frosted and hand-chamfered minute wheel train and balance bridges. • Pulsing at 4 Hz, the spectacularly “starified” escapement is positioned like a podium centerpiece, suspended in mid-air. • Traditional fine regulation – a hallmark of haute horlogerie that ensures optimal precision. This process involves meticulously adjusting the balance wheel’s inertia using peripheral weights (inertia blocks) to maintain the hairspring’s steady and consistent oscillation. The result: optimized caliber performance and lasting chronometric stability. • Twin barrels, working in parallel, equipped with longer, finer mainsprings for a more stable and linear energy release. The polished barrel blade reduces friction for improved efficiency. The redesigned drum barrels, with fluid, curving lines, seamlessly integrate with the bold bridge architecture of the movement. Proudly bearing the manufacture’s name and caliber designation, this subtle detail completes the movement’s refined aesthetic.
Wavy Titanium Case A bold evolution in the Wavy collection, this is the first case crafted from grade 5 titanium, a material prized for its strength and lightness. • Ultra-light yet incredibly strong, titanium embodies both modernity and innovation, delivering exceptional comfort without compromising durability. • The matte finish results from meticulous hand polishing, followed by microbead frosting for a refined texture. • A transparent DLC coating boosts resistance to scratches, shocks, and fingerprints. For comparison, stainless steel has a Vickers hardness of 200 HV, titanium 400 HV, and transparent DLC-treated titanium an impressive 1,200 HV (1,800 HV for the black DLC version). • A mirror-polished lug-to-lug contour adds a discreet yet sophisticated touch, enhancing the timepiece’s elegance without diluting its avant-garde appeal. This meticulous finish – exceptionally complex to achieve on titanium – creates a striking contrast with the case’s matte surface, balancing power with refinement. • Designed by Jérémie Arpa, son of Yvan Arpa, the case embodies independent, family-driven watchmaking at its finest. Its flowing, organic contours evoke the power of ocean waves, an effect heightened by titanium’s natural opacity – delivering a case design unlike anything seen before in haute horlogerie.
Mirror Effects The Wavy Titanium’s mirror caseback introduces an unprecedented innovation, a world first in watchmaking: • A fully reflective surface that offers a striking new way to experience the movement. • From the front, seeing through to the mirrored bottom creates the illusion of depth, with the movement seemingly floating in space, enhancing the ethereal purity of the skeletonized caliber’s aesthetic. • From the back, the one-way mirror effect teases the complexity of the movement without fully revealing it complexity, adding an element of mystery and sophistication.

Raketa “Avant-Garde” Wristwatch Is Art In Motion

The new version of the Avant-Garde watch, while based on the original model with its famous red triangular hand, rises to a fundamentally new design level.

It now has a multi-layered dial, a sophisticated case and more striking hands with Super-LumiNova glow, showing the time even in the darkest dark. One of the main design innovations was to replace the usual numbers with words: zero, three, six, nine. Three main avant-garde colours – red, white, and black – combined with the austere geometry of hands and fonts help emphasize the beauty and uniqueness of each moment. Even a quick glance at your wrist will remind you of this, revealing each time a new art composition on the dial.

Drawing on the idea that the Raketa Avant-Garde model is “art in motion”, you can constantly interpret and reinterpret this ever-changing artwork, filling it each time with new meanings.

The abstract geometrical shapes on the dial are set in motion by a Raketa automatic movement designed and manufactured at the Raketa Watch Factory in St. Petersburg. Looking through the transparent case back, you can appreciate the beauty of the movement and enjoy its harmonious work.

 Raketa “Avant-Garde”

Watch For Polar Expeditions Features Northern Lights Coating

Saint-Petersburg, Russia. April 2024. Raketa Polar – a watch created specially for polar expeditions – is back in Raketa’s permanent collection with a new design.

The journey beyond the polar circle is thorny and difficult: it requires great strength and long distances travelled in extreme conditions, both by land and sea. Following its long tradition of making watches for polar explorers, Raketa has developed a model for people who are ready to set out to conquer these boundless spaces.

The 24-hour dial is essential for time-reading beyond the polar circles where polar day and polar night can last for up to 6 months each. Six lines divide the perimeter of the dial into 6 quarters (4 hours each) allowing each crewmember to keep count of his watches/shifts during maritime expeditions. Another unique feature of the dial is the special Superluminova coating that reminds northern lights. It covers the entire surface of the dial and hands, ensuring perfect legibility even in total polar darkness.

The solid and robust case, with straight facets and sharp angles, is particularly adapted to the rigours of polar expeditions. The design of this case is harmoniously completed with a stainless-steel bracelet emphasising the masculine character of this timepiece.

The rotating bezel is engraved and enamelled with the name of all the Arctic ocean seas and their respective time zones, which allows using the GMT function. This 24-hour watch with a rotating bezel can be also used as a solar compass both in the northern and southern hemispheres.

The back of the watch reveals the beautifully decorated automatic movement which is entirely produced by the Raketa Watch Factory in Saint-Petersburg. The finishing of the rotor is reminiscent of northern lights.

Each Raketa Polar watch has a certificate confirming its technical fitness for use in the harshest natural conditions of polar regions. The certificate is issued within the frame of the “Arctic voluntary certification system” by the Nizhny Novgorod Testing Centre.

The cost of the watch is 2.000 EUR (VAT included)/ $2,930 CAD. For the comfort of our customers, Raketa watches are delivered worldwide free of charge by DHL directly up to their front door.

Russian Raketa Wristwatch Disrupts With Counterclockwise Universe Movement

Raketa “Russian Code”

Change directions with this counterclockwise watch!

A watch that ticks to the beat of the Universe

The Raketa Watch Factory releases a re-edition of one of its most popular models: the Raketa “Russian Code” with its counterclockwise hands.

A lightly brushed silver stainless steel case with a spherical sapphire glass, a matt grey metal dial with a 3D representation of the Earth, and a black genuine leather strap give a very classic look to this watch.

However, behind the discreet design lies a revolutionary concept: the concept that time should move in harmony with the natural counterclockwise movement of all the planets in our Solar System. You will notice that the second hand (with the Moon at its tip) also rotates in a reverse direction around the planet Earth that is in the centre of the dial.

You will see through the case back a beautifully decorated automatic movement entirely manufactured and assembled at the Raketa Watch Factory in Saint-Petersburg.

Are you ready to move on to the new generation of watches that tick to the beat of the Universe?

A watch that invites you to be different

To wear this watch, you will have to break free from the most fundamental rule of time-reading — the clockwise movement of time that was taught to us from ancestral times.

Indeed, early people read the time with sundials by observing the clockwise movement of the sun in the sky (from left to right) and of the corresponding shade on the dial (from right to left). When our ancestors finally invented the concept of hands (instead of shade) moving around a dial, they naturally decided to keep this clockwise movement that they observed in nature.

However, there is a serious flaw in this decision: the Sun doesn’t move clockwise in the sky. It’s an illusion — it actually doesn’t move at all. It is the Earth that moves in a counterclockwise direction around the Sun!

The Raketa Watch Factory corrected this mistake by designing a watch where the movement of time follows the natural movement in the Universe.

This watch is certainly not for the faint-hearted but rather for people who are willing to stand out from the crowd and be different!

A watch with a very special movement

The counterclockwise movement of the hands is powered by a very special Raketa automatic movement (2615R). The engineers of the Raketa Watch Factory inverted the movement of the hands by changing the construction of the 2 most important parts of the mechanical movement: the mainspring barrel and the escapement! This engineering feat could only be accomplished because Raketa produces in-house 100% of these parts.

A watch that is true to Raketa’s DNA

By following the movement in the Solar System, this watch underlines the link between Raketa and the Cosmos: the brand Raketa (which means “Space Rocket” in Russian) was created in 1961 in honour of the first manned flight in space by the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. Since then, Raketa’s designers and engineers were always inspired by space and regularly made watches for cosmonauts and watches celebrating the Solar System.

Raketa Watches Russia Launch Model Dedicated to Love

RAKETA BIG LOVE
Everything starts with love!

To mark the International Women’s Day on 8th March, Raketa releases a watch for ladies dedicated to the most beautiful feeling: Love.

Raketa “Big Love” offers a new interpretation of femininity. A watch as a mood, as a feeling, as love.

This model symbolizes the essence of Raketa’s “Big Zero” model: everything starts from 0. The hands of Raketa “Big Love” turn in a circle designating the word “LOVE” and each time the hour hand passes by the big “0” (or in this case the big letter “O”) everything restarts with LOVE!

The dial of Raketa “Big Love” embodies a minimalist design which is nevertheless full of feelings: a black and white dial with big letters L, O, V, E, crowned with the letter “O” (or with a zero – as you prefer).

With its classic black and white dial design and its four different color leather straps, Raketa “Big Love”  will match any style and mood. The white, bright reddish-orange as well as pastel shades of pink and blue straps will emphasize your personality in both casual and classic styles. The quick-change strap system allows you to easily change the straps depending on your current outfit or mood.

Through the case-back of the watch, you can see the beautifully decorated Raketa automatic movement, fully manufactured in Saint-Petersburg by the Raketa Watch Factory.

Raketa “Big Love” is produced this year in a limited quantity of 200 models.

RAKETA BIG LOVE
