In 2009, the Provincial government created “The Green Energy Act” to expand Ontario’s production of renewable energy, encourage energy conservation and promote the creation of clean-energy green jobs. The Act intentionally left municipalities out of the approval process and provided the Province with sole responsibility to approve commercial wind and solar energy generating projects within municipalities throughout Ontario. As a result of Provincial approvals, Haldimand County now has wind and solar projects underway with Samsung, NextEra, Capital Power and Niagara Region Wind Corporation (NRWC). To keep residents informed on project status, create greater awareness of the projects and the development processes involved, Haldimand County has developed a page on the County website entitled – “Green Energy Developments”.
Residents can access the link from the homepage (www.haldimandcounty.on.ca) , by clicking the icon — Green Energy Developments — and visitors will be taken to Haldimand County’s new information web page . On the page, visitors can access current project maps, frequently asked questions with answers, links to the proponent’s websites, agreement templates and more. The page was developed to ensure that residents had access to current, reliable information on the green energy projects underway in the County. Also included on the page is the email address email@example.com which will allow residents to ask construction related questions of staff.
Mayor Hewitt noted that “while Haldimand County and all Ontario municipalities have little recourse regarding the acceptance of these projects within our boundaries, we felt it was extremely important to ensure that residents have access to reliable information, including links to company websites with related contact information. This webpage will provide access to information on the projects before, during and after construction. It is a valuable tool for residents who want to be informed.”
