Dunnville Memorial Arena and Community Lifespan Centre’s design, construction plan and operations were developed using Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles and its recent nomination for the “Ontario Builders Award” is a testament to its high calibre design and construction. The use of LEED criteria provided a concise framework for identifying and implementing a practical and measurable green building solution. Haldimand County worked closely with consultants, the Dunnville Arena Committee and general contractors to build a top quality facility that the community and the County could be proud of.
Construction began in February 2010 and was substantially completed, both on time and within budget, with the facility ready for the start of hockey and figure skating season in September 2011. Haldimand County utilized the services of Schilthuis Construction Inc. to provide trade co-ordination, skilled labour, carpentry, concrete work, and supervision, as well as overseeing the schedule and project costs. The Schilthuis team worked in close cooperation, not only with Haldimand County, but also with the Dunnville Arena Citizens Committee which provided substantial input into amenities layout (the lobby for example), colour schemes and other features which were incorporated into the work of the contractors and construction teams.
Recently, the Dunnville Memorial Arena and Community Lifespan Centre project was nominated for the “Ontario Builders Award” in the non-residential category which includes building projects ranging from arenas to hotels and theatres. This award is presented annually by Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) which is the largest representative association in the construction industry with more than 200 members including most of Ontario’s small, medium and large contracting firms. Together, this group’s work accounts for approximately 70% of all of Ontario’s Industrial, Commercial and Institutional projects in any year.
Haldimand County was recently notified that the OGCA has awarded Honourable Mention to Schilthuis Construction Inc. for the Dunnville Arena project. Awards will be presented at the 8th Construction Symposium in April 2013. Congratulations to project team member, Schilthuis Construction Inc., for this recognition.
